Earthjustice Action Praises Senate Ag Committee Democrats for Voting Down Bad Farm Bill

Washington, D.C. — In response to the Farm Bill failing to advance in the Senate Agriculture Committee, Ranjani Prabhakar, Earthjustice Action’s Legislative Director for Healthy Communities, issued the following statement:

“The Senate Agriculture Committee’s failure to advance a Farm Bill that props up corporations is a victory for our farmers, our health and well-being, and our environment. Instead of addressing the debilitating cost-of-living crisis so families can put high-quality and affordable food on the table, this bill would have given corporations a free pass to keep pumping our lands and water full of toxic chemicals, and sell out and clearcut our public lands. We’re grateful to the Senators who stuck together to prevent this bad bill from getting through.

We hope committee leadership takes this opportunity to put forward a new version of the Farm Bill that prioritizes people, not polluters, and delivers the policies and provisions that support our farmers, put affordable and quality food on the table, protect critical ecosystems, and remove toxic chemicals from our agriculture.”

Ahead of the markup, Earthjustice Action signed letters calling on the committee to protect SNAP, conservation, and Tribal consultation, and oppose the anti-environment forestry provisions in the Farm Bill. Earthjustice Action also condemned the passage of the House of Representatives’ own version of the Farm Bill earlier this year, and was part of the 233 environmental organizations who urged House Democrats to vote against the bill, saying it would “undermine conservation and forest management, public health, community safety, and states’ rights.”
