Senators Kaine and Heinrich Fight Trump’s Executive Overreach in Congress

WASHINGTON, DC—Today, the U.S. Senate is expected to vote on S.J.Res. 10, which was introduced by Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) to terminate President Trump’s executive order declaring an ‘energy emergency.’ Since signing the order on his first day in office, President Trump has frozen federal funds for clean energy projects, fired thousands of workers across federal agencies focused on environmental protections, and attempted to weaken bedrock environmental laws like the National Environmental Policy Act. Before the vote, Earthjustice Action Vice President of Policy and Legislation Raul Garcia issued the following statement:

“President Trump’s contradictory energy emergency is a political favor to wealthy oil barons at the expense of our health. It comes from an administration that claims that the country is not producing enough energy while blocking clean energy production that would make energy bills more affordable. It completely ignores the real emergency of climate change and our failure to quickly transition to a clean energy future. Now is the time to stand up for the solutions we need that accelerate clean energy deployment, give communities a say in their future, and protect our planet for future generations. We thank Senators Kaine and Heinrich for not just expressing their opposition but putting their words into action.”
