Earthjustice Action Statement on Republicans Refusing to Protect Congressional Funding
WASHINGTON, DC—Today, the U.S. Senate failed to pass a continuing resolution to fund the federal government. Senate Democrats are fighting to include language that would block the Trump Administration from unilateral rescissions of congressionally appropriated funds. After the vote, Earthjustice Action Vice President of Policy and Legislation Raúl García issued the following statement:
“We need a stable appropriations process that is respected by all branches of government and political parties, and we need the certainty that the President will abide by Congress’ power of the purse. President Trump has blown up convention and the law by unilaterally blocking previously appropriated funds for purely political reasons. We thank Democrats for holding firm and demanding the inclusion of language that would prevent President Trump from disregarding the will of Congress. We call on congressional Republicans to assert themselves as a co-equal branch of government. If they continue to neglect their duty, they will be responsible for the consequences of any government shutdown.”
