Tell Congress: Protect our core environmental laws, protect our health

What's At Stake

This week, the House of Representatives is poised to vote on two bad bills that would eviscerate our bedrock environmental laws and put our clean air, clean water, and communities at risk. We need you to tell your representatives to vote no on the SPEED and PERMIT Acts.

The SPEED Act takes aim at the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which ensures federal agencies engage with those impacted by a project, disclose a project’s potential impacts, and explain their decision-making process.

In limiting the scope and applicability of NEPA, the SPEED Act would:

-Put private profits over public interest
-Limit the people’s ability to challenge polluters in court
Lower standards to allow for lackluster and incomplete environmental reviews

Meanwhile, the PERMIT Act threatens the beloved Clean Water Act. Specifically, it would:

-Allow industries to contaminate our water with “forever chemicals” without informing pollution control officials
Undermine states’ and Tribes’ abilities to protect their water from the harms caused by projects like oil and gas pipelines
Allow pesticides to enter our waterways without regard for Clean Water Act mandates

Permitting reform should help us quickly build the clean energy infrastructure of the future in a responsible and equitable way. The SPEED and PERMIT Acts aren’t that. They will lock in fossil fuels development, harm communities, and threaten our water they must be stopped.
