New Legislation Critical to Restoring our Clean Energy Future
Earthjustice Action applauds new legislation from Senators Schumer and Wyden to fully restore some IRA clean energy tax credits
WASHINGTON, DC—This past weekend, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) introduced the Lowering Electric Bills Act, legislation to restore some of the Inflation Reduction Act’s clean energy tax credits. The legislation would restore three tax credits – one on residential clean energy and two on clean energy storage technology – that Congressional Republicans effectively repealed with the passage of H.R. 1.
The Trump Administration’s policies are already resulting in real damage to the clean energy economy. Since the beginning of the Trump Administration, various companies have cancelled or scaled back over $22 billion in clean energy investments. Additionally, the Administration’s policies to dismantle the clean energy sector will cripple clean energy jobs, threatening over 400,000 already created and jeopardizing a projected 9 million created over a period of ten years.
After the introduction, Earthjustice Action Vice President of Policy and Legislation Raúl García issued the following statement:
“The IRA’s clean energy tax credits were turbocharging our clean energy economy—helping us meet our climate goals while lowering energy costs, creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs, and driving billions of dollars of investment in communities across the country. Republicans tanked this progress with their budget reconciliation bill, ripping good paying jobs and cheaper electricity out of their constituents’ hands and kowtowing to polluting industries. We thank Senators Schumer and Wyden for recognizing the critical role these tax credits play in helping us fight climate change and bringing more affordable electricity to our communities. We need the Senate to act.”
